'da Kink in My Hair

Theatre Passe Murialle/Mirvish Productions

BY TREY ANTHONY

DIRECTION, MUSIC, AND LYRICS BY WEYNI MENGESHA

AWARDS: 4 Dora Awards Nominations including BEST COMPOSITION by Weyni Mengesha

Trey Anthony’s play has journeyed a long way to make Canadian history with Mengesha as its director and composer. Originally written as a string of monologues for a one woman show it was developed over the years to become a large cast ensemble piece with Anthony’s hair salon world and Mengesha’s Dora nominated score weaving the monologues together. After receiving rave reviews through the fringe circuits in Canada and New York, ‘da kink came home to Toronto to make history as the first Canadian play to be performed at the Princess of Whales Theatre (2000 seat theatre). It has gone on to play in San Diego, London and has been developed into a national television show making it the first black Canadian sitcom on a national network.

Undeniable power… beautifully honest and searingly dramatic… written with passion and delivered with intensity...real grandeur and power.
